About

The IMPRS Gravity at the Extreme is a structured doctoral program funded by the Max Planck Society.

The IMPRS has a large body of students working towards their PhD degree. The curriculum offers standardized training in gravitational physics and also transferable skill training for its student members.

The IMPRS is established at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, located in Potsdam and Hannover, in cooperation with its university partners

The IMPRS covers many different areas of gravitational physics research with students working under different supervisors on fundamental physics problems.

The IMPRS is led by a spokesperson and their deputy, supported by academic and administrative coordinators and committees advising on the training programs and other activities of the IMPRS. Student representatives are also providing input into these activities.

The IMPRS for Gravity at the Extreme: from Theory to Observation is the first institute-wide IMPRS. It was established in 2024 and builds on previous programs:

  • IMPRS for Mathematical and Physical Aspects of Gravitation, Cosmology and Quantum Field Theory (Potsdam, 2016–2023)
  • IMPRS on Gravitational-Wave Astronomy (Hannover and Potsdam, 2006–2023)
  • IMPRS for Geometric Analysis, Gravitation and String Theory (Potsdam, 2003–2015)
